A Frozen Flower
A Frozen Flower is a South Korean movie from 2008 directed by Yu Ha.
First of all, watching this, subtitles of course are needed, atleast for me. I had no clue what they said when I watched the first version without it, even though it was visually beautiful. I couldn't endure watching that version for more than 20 minutes so what I got from that 20 minutes was just an intro displaying place and time basically.
When I managed to get a hold of some english subtitles the whole experience was of course more enjoyable.
It all takes place in Korea, more specific - Goryeo, where the king struggles to break down the dominance of Yuan dynasty in China. He creates a palace army, training young boys to grow up like warriors in royal surroundings. The word loyalty was the first word I come to think of watching these young boys risking their lives to defend the king. The high chief of this army is named Hong Lim and is a very close and intimate friend to the king. The king favours him above all else. When the new queen arrives to Goryeu, expectations begins, expectations of an offspring, an heir. The kings difficulties of being intimate with women makes him consider the idea of ordering Hong Lim to take his place, only as a favor to the king. Hesitant and unwilling as Hong Lim is, he accepts it and put his king's interents at first and tries. Only to discover that something that seemed to be so obscured and almost like secrets in the culture and time struck him - Love. The queen and Hong Lim developed an ever lasting love for each other. The movie goes on with the consequences to Hong Lim, the queen and the love triangle.
The rest is to watch. I can only say out of certainty that it was one of the best movies I've seen. Simply because the genre ( Which of course is Romance ), the tone/ the message ( The real truth about love and what it can do to you, what you're willing to suffer and endure, just to be able to love ), the visual beauty ( Great and fairytale-like enviroment, beautiful clothing, great and clear lighting and cool action scenes ) and the emotional acting. These are the top aspects why I love movies from either China, Japan, Korea or any other Asian country. It all seems to be so in depth and from the heart real art. Not like in the U.S where horrible acting and directing can go a long way. I also enjoyed the music in it, nothing out of the ordinary. As always - almost only instrumental music. Similar to the music in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or The Hourse of the Flying Daggers. Though in the middle of the movie the king sang and the queen also sang once. The song the king sang also played at the credit scroll.

As I said above, I loved the "emotional acting" in the movie. Like you could really see the actors being in their perfomances so fully and in depth that when they cried it seemed to be real. Basically like that. I felt like I was watching something real, something that didn't need directing at all. In fact, I wouldn't be supriced if Ju Jin-Mo (Hong Lim) actually love Song Ji-Hyo (The queen) in real life. It was some minor nudity in the movie as well. Which I don't have any hard time watching, but just wanted to put it out.
It was hard to find anything to complain about since all the posetive and good things in the movie mesmerized me and made me pretty blind towards flaws and failures. But if you like the typical asian/romance/history with cool action, martial art and swordfights type of movie this is definetly something for you. Similiar movies I find is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and The House of the Flying Daggers.
I would rate it 9/10
